DIY multiple guitar stand

Saturday, 09 May 2009 17:19

"A couple a days ago, I decided to plunge into a cool DIY project: building my very own multiple guitar stand. I realized I own several guitars which take up a lot of space in my home studio. Such guitar stand will increase room in my home studio...

Brainstorming

Before doing all the DIY stuff actually, I took the time to draw a...well...a drawing of my 6 slot multiple guitar stand as shown below:

The best way to make an accurate drawing is to use a vector graphic editor such as Inkscape.

Buying lumbers

I went to the local Home Centers to buy all required components to build my guitar stand:

  • 10 m of 38 x 38 furring strips
  • 1 m of Ø10mm wood rod to make dowel pins
  • 1000 x 60 x 10  plywood board
  • 10 m of Ø16mm PVC pipe
  • 18 Ø16mm PVC T's
  • Acrylic paint (color: black)
  • 4 heavy-duty rubber castors
  • PVC glue

Woodworking

All strips are 2m long, I had to use a Jigsaw to cut them down to the required length.

furring strips

You can use screws to assemble wooden piece together. Woodworking the easy way... I opted for dowel pins as they will secure aligned objects together. I think it's more reliable and durable. I cut a dowel rod into smaller lengths to make a bunch of dowel pins, 20mm long.

A nice wooden structure...

Assembling PVC pipes

PVC pipes

These PVC pipes form a complex structure to make sure that no guitars will slip off the guitar stand.

The final step: the test

Everything goes as planned: All guitars fit nicely in their respective slot. The wooden structure and the PVC pipe network are rigid. Reliable. I don't think this multiple guitar stand need further adjustments."
